A South Yorkshire MP has warned Barnsley residents will be hit hard by Government cuts to local authority budgets as spending per household is set to drop by £61 in the town.

Michael Dugher, Labour’s MP for Barnsley East, said that under the local government finance settlement Barnsley Council’s core spending power per household will drop from £1,652 in 2015/16 to £1,591 in 2016/17. In overall cash terms, this means that funding will see a drop of £6.5 million.

In comparison, the average national local council spending will fall by £53 per household but David Cameron’s local council of Oxfordshire will see spending reduced by £37 per household.

Mr Dugher said the cuts mean there will be “less money to spend on local public services, including children’s services.”
