Apprenticeships open day aims to create jobs

YOUNG people in the Isle of Axholme who are interested in becoming an apprentice can find out more at a special event.

On Wednesday North Lincolnshire Council will be staging an assessment day at the Kingsway Centre in Scunthorpe.

Those who go along between 3pm and 7pm will learn about the recruitment process, get help filling in the application form, find out more about the various jobs available and talk to the people they might be working with.

Interviews will then follow on January 10, with successful candidates starting work on April 2.

The local authority has improved its apprenticeship programme so apprentices will get chance to gain valuable work experience at the council as well as in the private sector.

Next year, the council will take on 32 apprentices and the private sector will take on a further 30. The jobs will be in a variety of roles across the authority although the final details have yet to be finalised.

Councillor Liz Redfern, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We are committed to giving young people opportunities to gain valuable work experience both within the council and in the private sector.

“We have improved our scheme to give young people even more opportunities by involving the private sector.

“It is not easy deciding what you want to do when you leave school and our scheme will hopefully help people decide.

“Two of our apprentices have been fortunate to get permanent jobs - one within the council.

“While we can’t promise everyone will get taken on at the end of their apprenticeship, they will at least gain important skills and knowledge to help them in their chosen careers.”

Last week at a full council meeting, Coun Redfern said the authority should continue to develop the innovative Apprenticeship Programme which aims to deliver training and future job opportunities for young people.

This is coupled with plans for a University Technical College in North Lincolnshire.
