Red Ladder Theatre Company is on the hunt for 40 local participants to make up the cast of PROMISED LAND, the first stage adaptation of Leeds-born journalist Anthony Clavane’s best-selling book about Leeds United.

Set in 1970s Leeds, this celebratory story of one city and its football club will be performed at The Carriageworks from June 22-30 2012.

From those looking for the chance to perform on the Carriageworks Stage, Red Ladder is offering a large number of speaking parts and also auxiliary roles including football crowds in the Elland Road Kop. The company is also recruiting a live band, particularly a percussionist, a guitarist, a keyboard player, a violinist and a bassist. Auditionees must be 18+ years old, no previous acting experience is necessary but performers must be enthusiastic and able to commit to weekly rehearsals and the dates of the performances.

Auditions for performers will be held at Swarthmore Education Centre, Leeds on Saturday March 31 (10am – 1pm and 2pm – 5pm) and at Yorkshire Dance on Sunday April 1 from 10am – 1pm. Participants can chose which slot is the most convenient. Successful performers need to commit to Sunday daytime rehearsals from Sunday April 15 2012 and Monday and Tuesday evenings for selected performers as well technical and dress rehearsals and performances in June 2012.

Winner of Sports Book of the Year 2011, ‘Promised Land’ tells the story of Leeds, its football club and its communities. Co-written by Anthony Clavane and Nick Stimson, the stage adaptation tells that same story through the eyes of Nathan and Caitlin, two young idealists growing up in mid-1970s Leeds, living in the same city but on opposite sides of a cultural and religious divide. Moving from the 1900s to the early 1960s and then on to the mid-1970s, this new play is a large-scale celebration of Leeds. It is a love story - but also a love letter to a great city. The show is a co-production between Leeds Civic Arts Guild, The Carriageworks and Red Ladder.
