A CHARITY supporter who has raised more than £40,000 in memory of his wife will be carrying the Olympic flame on its relay around the country.

Acker Shaw, 63, from Rossington, is hoping the honour of carrying the torch will help him reach his fundraising aim of £52,000 - a thousand for every year of his wife Brenda’s life.

Brenda died in December 2000, and since then her husband has been involved in charity collections for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Acker will be carrying the Olympic flame on June 26 through Conisbrough and hopes his efforts will translate into funds for the charity.

Following his wife’s death Acker said people would come up to him in the street and had over cheques and cash in memory, even though some of them had never met her.
