THIEVES who attempted to break into a charity van have cost the community dear.
Goole's Community Warehouse vehicle was the victim of crime during the early hours of Friday morning - suffering a smashed quarter light, door lock and ignition - rendering it unusable.
Charity trustee Peter Blades told the Courier: "It's just stopped the business dead.
"It's going to cost us hundreds and hundreds of pounds to get it repaired, and while it is being fixed we are unable to pick up and drop of any furniture.
"We will not be able to make our donations at the end of the month as we will have to pay to have the van repaired.
"We can't sell anything from the warehouse unless people have their own transport."
The Community Warehouse, which is based on Limetree Avenue, was originally launched by the late Olive Hunt MBE, but is now a totally separate organisation from the adjacent Community Store.
People donate furniture and unwanted goods, and volunteers carry out house clearances, and then the worthy items are sold to the public.
The money raised each month is then ploughed back into the community via donations to football teams, churches, schools and community centres.
Peter said: "It's a good thing for the community. People can buy furniture as cheap as anything from us, and in this credit crunch people are finding us even more useful."
It is believed the break in took place between 3.30-9am as the vehicle was parked at Eastgate.
Peter explained: "We left it parked where my friend could see it at Eastgate but unfortunately they broke in at the side he couldn't see.
"It's knocked this business flat down. The van is our lifeline full stop.
"I can't see why they have picked on us. It's a bit of a let down, we work solely for the community and there's that many people who appreciate it and what we do."
Anyone with information about the incident, or who can help the Community Warehouse, should phone 07922369988.
