A STUDENT from the Isle is flying high after landing his dream job as a cabin crew member.

Ashley Petch, of Belton, has been recruited by the UK’s largest charter airline, Thomson, after impressing in a rigorous application process.

The 18-year-old will swap the Isle for London next month after he was one of the lucky few from over 5,000 applicants who secured a full time position.

Ashley is currently studying at Scunthorpe’s John Leggott College (JLC) for his BTEC in Travel and Tourism, A-Level Leisure Studies and BTEC Cabin Crew.

To land the job, the former South Axholme pupil had to complete an online application, negotiate group and written assessments, role play and impress at an interview.

Ashley was offered a cabin crew position at the London-based company and will start his new job on March 12.

He said: “I have always wanted to work in the aviation industry, all the way through school I knew I wanted to fly and travel to different parts of the world.

“I made sure that when I came to JLC I chose subjects that would help me pursue my ambition and I think the specialist course in BTEC Cabin Crew really helped me get the job.

“The people that interviewed me were really interested in my cabin crew course as they felt it gave me valuable insight into the aviation industry.”

The cabin crew course covers health and safety, emergency situations, selling techniques and in flight customer announcements.

“A lot of the other applicants were in their twenties and had previous travel experience or had previous cabin crew positions,” added Ashley. “As far as I know, I am the only person to be recruited straight out of education.”

Claire Holmes, JLC Head of Leisure and Tourism, said: “Ashley is such an enthusiastic student and has always been so ambitious. We are all so proud of him for pursuing his dream and wish him the best of luck for his future.”
