The Witches - Doncaster Civic Theatre, January 22, 2009

FOR the second year in a row The Rep has turned to the works of Roald Dahl in choosing its January production for children, with The Witches the latest tale to grace the Civic Theatre stage.

The witches of the title aren't of the black hat and broomstick variety - to the untrained eye they look just like normal ladies, except for the gloves they wear to hide their claws and the wigs that hide their scabby bald heads.

We are quickly introduced to a young boy and his grandmother, who teaches him how to spot witches. The pair go on holiday to a seaside hotel - which unfortunately also happens to be hosting a convention of witches who turn him into a mouse!

The story moves along at a cracking pace to keep youngsters on the edge of their seats, and the show boasts some high-energy comic set-pieces that produce real belly laughs from kids and adults alike.

The witches, led by Leah Woffenden with an exuberant performance as the Grand High Witch, find a successful balance between frightening and funny and the antics of the mouse-boy and his friend as they run amok in the hotel kitchen delighted the children in the audience.

With a run that continues until this Saturday, it's definitely worth catching for theatregoers with children in tow.
