Stage struck students

DONCASTER students are breaking free and reaching for the stars as they take centre stage in the cult classic High School Musical.

The National Diploma students from Doncaster College will be 'flying high' when they perform the Disney classic this weekend at the Harvey Theatre, High Melton, on June 4, 5 and 6.

With a cast of squeaky clean characters and bubble gum sing along songs it's sure to be a big hit with all the family, especially the kids.

High School Musical started life as an Emmy Award-winning American television film and on its release back in 2006, it was the most successful Disney Channel Original Movies ever produced. With a television sequel released last summer and a feature film sequel planned for October 2008, a best selling soundtrack, and a truck load of merchandise available, the High School brand has taken on a life of its own and become a global phenomenon.

The story, described as a modern-day adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, is set in an American High School and follows two high school students from different social groups – Troy Bolton, captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez, a shy and intelligent transfer student - cue a Sandy and Danny Grease style romance.

Together, they try out for the lead parts in their high school musical and, as a result, divide the school. Despite other students' attempts to stop their plans, Troy and Gabriella resist peer pressure and rivalry, inspiring others along the way not to stick with the status quo, resulting in a good old-fashioned happy ending.

Drama course leader Justine Green said: "The students are all really excited to perform such a popular show as High School Musical. The tickets have already started selling fast, and we're looking forward to showing the people of Doncaster just what we can offer here at Doncaster College."

Performances begin at 1.15pm and 7pm on each of the three days.

Tickets, priced at 8 for adults and 5 for concessions, are available by contacting Laura Zenbergs on 01302 553578 or click here to visit www.don.ac.uk/arts
