Soul stars
SOME of the sexiest, slinkiest and sassiest stars on the UK R'n'B scene are set to descend on Doncaster this month.
Doncaster Racecourse is set to follow-up a fantastic feast of 80s legends at Town Moor last week with a trio of soulful songsters arriving in town on June 27.
The pop trinity of Lemar, Alesha Dixon and Jamelia will be bringing a bit of bling to racegoers for a night that's bound to be packed with some great songs and some sultry and soulful performances.
There aren't many who can claim success on the scale of UK R'n'B legend Lemar. As well as awards, acclaim, platinum sales and sold-out tours, the North London singer-songwriter is one of a handful of artists able to balance commercial success with credibility as one the country's top vocalists.
With vocals comparable to the late great Luther Vandross, Lemar supported the likes of Destiny's Child and Usher before becoming a huge star in his own right.
Meanwhile, fellow star on the bill Alesha Dixon has become best known in recent times as the winner of Strictly Come Dancing in 2007 and for the Comic Relief charity trek up Mount Kilimanjaro with a host of well-known showbiz stars.
She first hit the big time as one third of all-girl sensations Mis-Teeq and is best known for her catchy top ten hit The Boy Does Nothing which has become a radio staple.
And last but not least is Jamelia, the undisputed queen of the UK R'n'B scene. Since breaking into the charts in 2004 with her debut album Thank You, which has her three top five hits, the sexy songstress has gone on to become one of Britain's most successful black entertainers.
She is also no stranger to Doncaster having been a regular visitor to the Keepmoat Stadium over the past 12 months to watch her footballer husband Darren Byfield in action with Doncaster Rovers, although he has since left the club.
The concert comes hot on the heels of last Friday's 80s night at the course when torrential downpours failed to dampen the spirits of thousands of racegoers who braved horrendous conditions for a feast of the decade's icons.
Curiosity Killed The Cat, Paul Young, Belinda Carlisle, Midge Ure, Kim Wilde and Kid Creole and The Coconuts all lined-up on the outdoor stage - and fans had to brave the wet weather with plastic macs and umbrellas to see their idols belting out an array of classic hits.
Racecourse managing director Adam Waterworth said: "Our strategy with the music nights was to offer a great evening's racing followed by a range of live outdoor gigs that would suit a variety of musical tastes - we think we have achieved that with the artists we have signed up."
