Local school children were given a lesson in safety when house builder, Lovell, demonstrated the dangers posed by Doncaster’s building sites.
Year One pupils from Barnburgh Primary School were taken on a tour of Lovell’s latest Doncaster development, Lincoln Gardens located just off Carr House Road, to highlight the risks of playing on construction sites.
Appropriately dressed in high visibility vests and hard hats, the group of 30 five and six-year-olds were taken on a behind the scenes tour by the Lincoln Gardens team, led by Site Manager, Rob Kerr, and Regional Health and Safety Adviser, Matt Jarvis.
Matt Jarvis says: “At this time of year it’s more important than ever to make children aware of the consequences of playing on building sites; as the lighter evenings, warmer weather and school holidays arrive, children find themselves with more time to play outside, so it’s important to keep them safe from the hazards lurking on construction sites.
“While children may view building sites as an adventure playground, there are hidden dangers that could easily lead to injury and as a responsible house builder, Lovell is committed to educating local children on these.
“The reason we encourage schools to participate in these activities is to ensure children are educated properly on the dangers pose by building sites, to keep them safe and show them exactly why they should stay away from building sites.”
Following the site tour, the pupils were given quiz sheets to test their new found knowledge on the threats posed by the building site.
Barnburgh Primary School teacher, Mrs Rosie Crawford, accompanied the children, she says: “It was a fantastic day out, the children thoroughly enjoyed visiting Lincoln Gardens and they’re now working on their thank you letters to the Lovell team onsite.
“They were all keen to get involved with asking questions and learning about building site safety, so it was a really educational day out and great to see them all in their hard hats and high visibility vests.”
Matt Jarvis adds: “We feel these safety lessons have a greater impact than if they were delivered in the classroom, but inviting the children onsite is also a good way for us to engage with the local community and create a day out that is both educational and fun.”
The site safety visit at Lincoln Gardens follows Lovell’s recent commendation by the Considerate Constructors Scheme for its efforts to minimise disruption and maximise safety in Doncaster with a ‘Performance Beyond Compliance’ certificate.
The five-star builder is currently creating a new community of two, three and four-bedroom homes, which focus on high specification living and energy efficiency.
