It’s a sad day for sports followers throughout the region. Sad but also an occasion with hope for the future.
The Green’Un is now on sale; a special retro edition celebrating 106 years of history.
For once the headline on the front page does not scream Owls or Blades, but states: “Back to the Future.”
Next season the Green’Un points the way ahead after its long and distinguished history in print form.
It will cease as a newspaper in the traditional sense but will reappear as a vibrant force online.
Followers of the Blades, Owls, Rovers, Reds, Millers and Spireites will still be able to read bang up to the minute match reports of their team on Saturdays complete with pictures.
In addition our popular and growing Twitter service on Saturday afternoons will bring goals as they happen and the online reports will be constantly updated.
We have adapted to the changing times and requirements. And not just on Saturdays, too. Look out for the influential Behind the Scenes feature with our writers in the know bringing you their take on what is happening at your club. But today is also about nostalgia. The Back to the Future edtion of the Green’Un does just that: it pinpoints what’s in store but it also affectionately looks back on some of the memorable moments in this region’s sports history.
Wembley Blades, Wembley Owls, pix and articles on some of the icons through the years - Dooley, Hagan, Currie and Waddle - and a look back through the memory banks of such as Keith Farnsworth, Ian McMillan and Les Payne. It truly is an edition not to be missed.
So, Back to the Future and follow us next season via www.thestar.co.uk and Twitter:@StarGreenUn.
