An Isle couple enjoyed their wedding day 50 years ago - and it was made all the more special by the village football club.
Jennifer and Gordon Hobson, of North Street, West Butterwick, set their wedding day for October 18 1963.
But this date also clashed with a football fixture for West Butterwick Football Club who Mr Hobson played for at the time.
As moving the wedding date was no option, club and league officials agreed to move the fixture, so all of Mr Hobson’s teammates could attend the big day.
They were married at St Mary’s Church in West Butterwick, surrounded by all of their family, friends and teammates.
Mrs Hobson, 68, a retired retail worker, said: “It was a little unusual but they did it to accommodate everyone.
“It was a nice gesture to make sure everyone could attend.
“My memory of the day is a little hazy, so much has happened since then. But I do remember it being very windy.”
Mr Hobson, 73, a retired builder, played for West Butterwick FC for more than ten years and is well known in Isle footballing circles.
The quirky story was covered by the Epworth Bells at the time which ran with the headline ‘Wedding On - Match Off’.
The couple have kept the newspaper cutting in their wedding album.
Mrs Hobson said: “It’s nice to keep things like that and the grandchildren always enjoying looking back at things like that.”
The couple recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
They went for a meal at a restaurant in Cleethorpes with family.
Mrs Hobson added: “We had a really lovely time.
“It’s always special when you have your closest relatives there.
“I think it’s no big secret to how to have a long marriage.
“You just need to make sure you stick together with each other through thick and thin.”
The couple had three children and seven grandchildren, who helped them celebrate their big anniversary.
