My Tunes - Lyn Paul
SONGSTRESS LYN PAUL, formerly of the New Seekers and now touring the country in a stage version of the classic movie Footloose as well as starring as Freda Danby in Emmerdale, reveals her top ten songs to Doncaster showbiz writer PHIL PENFOLD.
1. What Are You Doing For The Rest Of Your Life - Peggy Lee
A song that I often sing for my husband Alan, because the lyrics tell that special person exactly how you feel for them. Plus the fact that Peggy Lee was one of THE great song stylists.
2. Hurt - Timi Yuro
Another terrific set of lyrics, explaining how it feels when you've really gone through the mill for someone – or something. I read some place that Ms. Yuro had gone into a record company, demanded to see a producer, and then sang this for him – and he immediately rushed her into a studio, and it became a huge hit.
3. Please, Please Me – The Beatles
When I was a kid in Manchester my parents told me to pop out and buy them a record. They wanted I Remember You by Frank Ifield. When I got to the store, a friend of mine said 'Have you heard the new one by The Beatles?' and I listened, and I bought that instead. Very naughty! My parents were a bit surprised when I took it home. But they grew to love it as well!
4. He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother - The Hollies
Another one from when I was growing up. I've sung this in cabaret so many times, and I love the song. The Hollies are largely forgotten now – but they shouldn't be, because they were VERY good indeed.
5. If - Jack Jones
I toured a lot with Jack, he is and was the perfect gentleman, and he knows how to handle and to caress a song and how to make it 'talk'. I wish that there were more singers like him who understood lyrics!
6. Dance With My Father - Luther Vandross
I remember hearing this for the first time when my husband Alan and I were on holiday in Greece. Needless to say, the tears were streaming down my face.
7. Wake Me Up When September Comes - Green Day
One of my son Ryan's favourite songs. He's got great musical taste, and he'll often say to me 'mum, you HAVE to listen to this, you'll love it!' He's not often wrong!
8. Lonely World - Limp Bizkit
This is a strange choice – but I'll tell you why. Ryan used to play it over and over again when he was at school, and it's a song all about bullying, and bullies. And we later discovered that he was going through hell at school. He was in torment. We put a stop to all of that – by moving away entirely. And, not long after, he stopped playing this song. Thank God. I never want to hear it again. But it is in this list to remind me how obscene bullying is!
9. Holding Out For A Hero - Bonnie Tyler
I hear this every night, and I still think that it's a great song, and it makes my spine tingle. But the best memory of all is at when we ran a pub in Egham in Surrey we were having a few drinks with friends one night and a great mate, Abby, jumped up on the bar after closing time and did this number, to a real 'bump and grind' beat. She was terrific!
10. Oh Me, Oh My - Lulu
A song about everything that you'd do to keep someone in your life. It gets me every time!
