Homegrown football legend Kevin Keegan has been voted the greatest Doncaster-born footballer of all-time in an online poll.

The Armthorpe-born star, who collected a huge haul of trophies during a glittering career in the 1970s and 1980s with Liverpool and England, was a clear winner in our survey to find Doncaster's best ever footballer.

Keegan was way ahead of runner-up, current Doncaster Rovers defender Andy Butler, who landed second spot ahead of Highfields-born David Pegg, one of the eight Manchester United players and so called Busby Babes who died in the 1958 Munich Air Disaster.

The trio finished ahead of England and Tottenham ace Danny Rose, currently gearing up for tomorrow's Euro 2016 with Wales in France with former Doncaster Rovers stars Chris Brown, now with Blackburn and Thorne-born James Baxendale tied in fifth spot.

Doncaster Rovers legend Alick Jeffrey was excluded from the vote as he was born in Rawmarsh in Rotherham.

Some voters bemoaned the lack of women in the list, including members of the famous Doncaster Belles with Doncaster Rovers' fanzine Popular Stand tweeting: "Should be a toss-up between Kevin Keegan, Karen Walker and Gill Coulthard but you've left 2 of them off your list..."

Another commented: "You always miss out one of the greats, a guy called Eddie Burbanks, who was born in Bentley. Eddie scored the winner in the 1937 FA Cup final, won the league with them, played during the war years as an international, and spent his career alongside the great Raich Carter, who was arguably the greatest player of his era. This guy is always ignored, but is arguably up there with Keegan and Pegg."

Ron Flowers, who was born in Edlington and who played for Wolverhampton Wanderers, was an England International and member of the 1966 World Cup squad, was another who slipped through our net along with homegrown former Rovers and Wolves star Mark Rankine.

The result marks a double success for Keegan in recent weeks.

Last week he topped a poll to find Doncaster's favourite celebrity which saw him triumph ahead of actress Sheridan Smith and booming thespian Brian Blessed while One Direction star Louis Tomlinson was named the town's least favourite star.
