Improved South Yorkshire Canal boosts anglers' weights

BETTER form on the South Yorkshire Canal meant that anglers saw their weights improve in the latest Pilkington AC Open.

Roy Nixon (Pilkington AC) won the match from peg 56 with 11-5-0 of roach and bream taken on pole and caster over groundbait.

Second spot was claimed by E Hughes with 9-6-0 ahead of 3 Ian Holian (Clay Lane) 8-13-0, 4 Phil Evans (Pilkington AC) 8-7-0, 5 Dave Bell (Daiwa Dons) 7-6-0 and 6 BJ Daines (Clay Lane) 7-4-0.

n Woodhouse Grange was a bit patchy in last week's matches.

Graham Martin won the Wednesday match fished on Heron with a level 56-0-0 of carp taken on pole and pellet from peg 47 to finish in front of 2 Mick Rodgerson 43-3-0 and 3 Keith Saunders 37-15-0.

Weights were better for the Wednesday evening match, which was also fished on Heron, with Rui Lucas winning from peg 23 with 88-2-0 of carp on pole and pellet.

Runner-up was G Williams with 49-9-0, while John Holvey 44-1-0 finished third.

Thursday's match saw a tie for first between Mick Rodgerson and Ron Beckett with both anglers weighing in 56-0-0.

Tony Clegg finished behind the pair with 48-15-0.

Roy Betts won the Saturday match with 49-9-0 of carp from peg 48 on Cobble and was followed by 2 John Emmerson 49-2-0 and 3 M Newton 47-6-0.

Sunday's Open was fished on Heron lake and won by John Dudley with 33-9-0 of carp on pole and pellet from peg 21.

Les Palmer took second with 26-6-0 ahead of 3 Franco Pezzullo 23-2-0 and 4 Bernie Larder 21-0-0.

n The latest Stainforth Angling Centre match was fished at Swanlands in Thorne.

Paul Buzzard won the match with 42-0-0 of carp on pole with corn and pellet from peg 8 to see off the challenges of 2 Doug Farmer 25-4-0, 3 Mark Waite 24-10-0 and 4 John Dudley 21-6-0.

n Denis Pinkos won Sunday's Rotherham Open fished on the River Don at Cadeby with 11-13-0 of roach and skimmers alternating pole and feeder with maggot from peg 103.

Runner-up Joe Murray finished with 10-6-0 in front of 3 Glyn Brown 8-3-0,,4 Stu Foster 7-14-0, 5 Brian Haigh 7-11-0 and 6 Mick Barry 5-4-0.

Wednesday's match was fished on the Earth Centre stretch of the River at Denaby and won by Joe Murray with 15-8-0 of roach and skimmers taken on stickfloat and maggot from peg 51.

Denis Pinkos grabbed second with 7-0-0, while John Goodhall 5-0-0 finished third.

n Shane Crompton (Triana) triumphed in the Pines Lakes evening match.

Fishing from peg 24 using red maggot and a whip shallow, his haul of 54-9-0 was enough to head the 12-strong field.

Second place went to Lee Clarke (Pine Lakes) 45-4-0, who edged out 2 Steve Jones (Sensas Thorne) 40-1-0, 3 Alain Urruty (Triana) 38-7-0 and 4 Luke Frost (Pine Lakes) 15-9-0.
