Gardener loses job after seven years hard work
A VILLAGE has rallied behind a popular council gardener who has been told he isn't wanted this season.
Ivor Lewis is a much-loved figure in Edlington where he has tended gardens for the past seven years, impressing residents with his hard work and willing attitude.
He has now been told that he won't get a job this spring - prompting a petition of support signed by more than 400 people from the village.
Ivor, 54, of Broomhouse Lane, Edlington, said: "I was distraught when I found out I hadn't got the job. I've never had a day off sick and I always work hard.
"I'm very well known and liked in Edlington, people trust me and I always do a good job."
Ivor, who has learning difficulties, lived with and cared for his mother before her death in 1994 and found the job helped him cope with his grief: "After that I was really depressed but when I got my gardening job it gave me something to look forward to, I think my mum would have been proud," he said.
"It feels nice that people are supporting me and signing the petition," added Ivor, who has been looking forward to and preparing for starting work as usual for weeks.
Angela Brogan, of Conisbrough, who has been Ivor's friend for 20 years helped him set up the petition and says they will fight this decision all the way.
She says when they questioned the decision Ivor, who has completed a number of courses and has certifiates for his work, was told "his name did not come out of the hat."
Ms Brogan added: "If he was good enough for the past seven years why not now? "You could not find a harder working man who would do anything for anyone.
"Ivor has built up a level of trust with people, it's not all about qualifications, it's about experience."
John Coates, Ivor's former foreman at the Edlington depot, said he was a valuable member of staff who was never late or off sick.
He added: "If Ivor did have a problem it was that he was so committed to work that he would have to be reminded to take his alloted leave."
"I cannot understand why an individual with such a good previous record could be overlooked for a post that he has been welcome to for several years."
Director of Neighbourhoods and Communities, Jane Miller said: "We do not comment on individual cases but can confirm we are already investigating issues raised in connection with this confidential staffing matter."
Mayor Peter Davies said he did not want to comment at this stage.
Angela and Ivor also plan to take his case to MP Caroline Flint.
