Duo build new future with bricklaying course

FORMER steelworker Robert D'Silva and labourer Louis Tindall are building a bright future in the bricklaying world after Doncaster College started a new course.

Robert, aged 36, from Cadeby, and Louis, 32 from Retford, met four years ago at the college after they both decided to retrain and send their careers down a different path.

After completing two sets of part-time night courses, the pair are now enrolled on the new NVQ Level 2 in Brickwork - a qualification set up for them by the college.

Robert said: "Retraining has been good and the teaching at the college has been great. It's given me an excellent career. This new qualification means our work can improve and get more business."

The duo now work together daily in the South Yorkshire area after setting up their own businesses.

Doncaster College's construction programme manager Paul Davies has seen the pair progress through the different courses.

He said: "Robert and Louis are model pupils. I paired them up on the first day they came to college four years ago and have been working together ever since.

"It's great to see them work their way through qualifications together and then team up outside of college in business.

"The lads came to me asking if they could get an NVQ Level 2 in brickwork so we developed the course and they're currently being assessed for the new qualification. I'm very proud of the lads."
