If preparing for a world title defence was not hard enough, Jamie McDonnell is now having to do it on significantly less sleep.

The WBA bantamweight champion became a father for the first time a fortnight ago when wife Hollie gave birth to daughter Saskia Arabella.

And though quickly finding himself a doting dad, McDonnell admits getting up early for training in the mornings is a bit more difficult now.

“I’m definitely feeling it,” he said. “Those sleepless nights take their toll.

“Our lass has been really good though. She’s let me go off to the spare room so I can try and get a bit more sleep.

“I’ll be on full time dad duty in a few weeks after my fight so I’m sure I’ll be making up for it then.”

McDonnell will defend his WBA crown against Walberto Ramos in Liverpool on November 22.

If successful he will be off to Las Vegas for a world title eliminator against WBO king Tomoki Kameda early next year.

And he says the arrival of his daughter has given him extra motivation to succeed at the very top.

He said: “I’ve got a family to provide for now.
“These world title fights pay pretty well and it’s money that can set us all up.”
