Roads are too busy for horses to be safe

I WAS pleased to read that Ms Andrew (Freeviews, Sept 25) enjoys a "hack" with her friends. However, as much as this rural ideal appeals to most of us, today's roads are not the place to take horses for jaunts.
Yes, horses came before automobiles, but the days of horse-drawn transport are long gone and modern roads are not designed to accommodate them; fields and bridlepaths are where they should be, not causing a menace on the highways.
Cyclists in single file (letter by Mr Marriott, same page) deserve all the respect due to cars and, of course, no-one would wish to harm a horse, but to see a young girl perched atop a very large and possibly skittish animal in the road makes one's senses shout "accident waiting to happen" and I, for one, breath a sigh of relief when having overtaken it.
Enjoy your hobby, but do so safely in fields and don't dice with tragedy playing "my little pony" on today's busy roads.
