THE arson attack on the Odeon Cinema in Doncaster over the weekend (reported in The Star on June 15 and 16) has evoked memories of a previous incident involving an historic structure which local people wanted to preserve, namely the blaze at the old Doncaster Rovers FC ground at Belle Vue in 1998.
It is therefore very much to be welcomed that Lazarus Properties has rightly drawn attention to the failure of the police to deal properly with thefts of metal in the centre of Doncaster, particularly as this problem appears to extend across South Yorkshire.

For example the recent pillaging of St Peter's Church in Conisbrough and the dangerous thefts of railway equipment in remoter stretches of the area.
