IN response to Nic Burne's letter of April 15, 2008.
I would like to draw attention to the fact that the Government and Primary Care Trust proposal for a new Doncaster GP-led surgery will result in a much better service for the residents of Doncaster who currently struggle to get to see their own GP, because most GP practices operate hours that are unsuitable to the vast majority of their patients.

The important point is that the new practice will provide additional capacity – which means more appointments – for local people, at times that are currently not available at their own surgeries. There will be no threat to existing surgeries, this is an additional service designed to offer more choice for patients and one the can be funded without having any impact on other services.

Michael Tombs
Thorne

This is virtually a duplication of letter "Surgery is Good News".

'..will result in a much better service for the residents of Doncaster who currently struggle to get to see their own GP..'
Exactly who struggles and what is their problem.
I have regular visits to our local surgery, and make it fit in with other activities.

Has anyone thought of the additional costs involved of this additional service; and could it be put to better use.
Finally, what is meant by GP led Surgery.

No Takers from my post above.
In my opinion 'GP led Surgery' is incorrect - it is led by Government.
And the Free Press has shown me (Today's Free Press) Michael Tombs is Labour Candidate for Thorne Ward. Why are we not surprised.

Thank you for publishing an edited version of my letter replying to Nic Burne, of the Chestnut House Surgery, Thorne. At the end of my letter printed on the 24th of April, you added 'Labour Candidate for Thorne'.

I would like to draw attention to the list of nominated persons for the Thorne Ward - Linda Curran is the Labour Candidate for Thorne, not myself. As the owner of a Doncaster based business, I do not have the time to stand for election, although earlier in the year I had considered it. As a lifelong Labour supporter, I would like to wish Linda Curran well in the election on Thursday, and hope that she triumph's over sitting Councillor Martin Williams.

Labour has done a lot for the people of Thorne:

POLICING: More police on the streets of Thorne, with the Safer Neighbourhood Teams now operational, residents in Thorne can speak to local police officers, in the street, at the police station on Durham Road, by telephone or by mobile phone.

HEALTH: The Vermuyden Centre is providing a range of out patient services locally, so residents of Thorne do not have to go to the DRI for some medical appointments. Thorne's only midnight pharmacy is based here, open from 8am - 12midnight (Monday to Friday), 8am - 8pm on Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday. The Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust is one of only 3 trusts in England to meet its 18 week target for all referrals from the GP to Treatment, in many cases the trust provide treatment earlier than required.

EDUCATION: Trinity Academy has this year recognised as the most improved Academy in England and Wales, and as the most improved school in the Yorkshire and Humber Region. All the primary schools in Thorne are scheduled to be refurbished, in some schools that work has already begun.

EMPLOYMENT: Thorne's refurbished Job Centre is helping more people than ever access work and training. Unemployment in Doncaster fell in 2007 by 855.

SOCIAL HOUSING: Thorne is an area of development wi
