Disappointed with last trip to my home town

ALTHOUGH it is some six decades since I actually lived in Thorne, I still treasure my long family connection with the town of my birth.
I well recall the thriving market place, the outstanding grammar school and the many public buildings redolent of a proud township mindful of its prosperous past and optimistic present.

On a recent visit I was, to say the least, appalled to find almost universal dilapidation - the fine library building abandoned - the old school buildings in Fieldside in total decay, the vicarage once a noble example of Georgian architecture in ruins.

I could add the former police station, council offices, cinema and Hirst's ironmongers - all once quite outstanding buildings now in tatters. Surely some pride of place must still exist. At least the redevelopment of the former grammar school is a cause for congratulation. Nevertheless I find little to cheer in the present state of this once bustling township.
