I AM a care worker, I look after my mother who is disabled.
On a recent trip to see my uncle who lives in Liverpool my parents came across something that I think all towns and cities who want to promote themselves in a positive light should have.
It was a car park for disabled people with over 200 spaces..
. not only that there was also access to wheel chairs, disabled buggies, (both single and tandem). and lots of other disabled aids. Most of them free.
It was right in the middle of the city centre. And there were no time limits.
My parents have a hard time trying to find a disabled space in Doncaster if not there before 9am and then can only stay for the average 2-4 hour limit. Being able to stay all day if need be would be a big help.
We know parking is a pain for any driver but most able bodied drivers have plenty of choice, (even though they have to pay), which is way a lot of them will and do park in disabled bays if they can get away it.
Having somewhere for just disabled people would make a lot of drivers very happy, and it would make life a lot easier for people who find it hard just to get through 'normal' every day life. Able bodied drivers should think about that before taking up something that is there to help someone live that 'normal' life.
Disabled people take up a large part of our community, more than you think due to the ageing population. Doncaster could be one of the first cities to promote disabled people in a positive light in the North of England and show the rest of the Country it is okay to be disabled and be able to live your life how you want to.
