Last Sunday dinner-time I went for a pint with my dad Bill, a former miner, to Grimethorpe Working Men's Club.
I was button-holed by a number of former miners in the club who informed me that they had been approached by representatives of a firm of Cardiff solicitors touting for business to represent miners in putting in a claim for the recently announced compensation scheme for the condition known as Miners Knee.

Could I kindly take this opportunity through your column to inform my constituents and other former miners that they do not need to use any solicitors to claim this benefit. The Department for Works and Pensions can provide any assistance they require in the completion of forms and it will not cost them anything to claim the benefit.

Former miners seeking further detailed information should contact Jobcentreplus, Castleford IIDB Centre, Leodis Way, Leeds LS88 8AQ. Telephone 0845 758 5433, Textphone 01977 464144. The new benefit will not come in until later this summer.
