Something different
Competition to find the town's best band

WHEN we first received the demo for our Demo Showdown from The Torn, we knew there was something different about the group.
Mainly because they were the only band to single-handedly put so much effort into a demo - and then forgot to pay the postage price. However after that little slip up, the group proved they were worth the hassle by investing in an even larger portfolio to display when sending in a month later.
Of course, when the group first started out they were a lot less organised. First forming as an indie covers band they played all the latest hits around Doncaster until fans started asking the band for new material. It wasn't until then that the group realised they had a knack for writing songs.
Lead singer Damien said: "Well, after people started asking for our own material I just started writing some songs and then people started requesting our own songs at gigs which was great - until between us we had a programme of songs. So then we decided to go as The Torn and we've never looked back since!"
The group have been gigging endlessly ever since that day and have supported the likes of The Specials and The Bluetones. And now with a line-up change, this new four piece are ready to take on the world.
You can see them in action when The Torn play at Vintage Rockbar on May 17.

Meanwhile, The Anderson Council, joint winners of our competition in conjunction with Higher Rhythm to find the town's best bands, brought something different to the competition. Flexed with unusual rhythms and minimalistic attitudes it has been the only CD received so far which Steve Mundin, senior manager at Higher Rhythm immediately took a shine to.
Now he's waiting to play it on his radio show we have to wonder what makes The Anderson Council so different. Not driven by the success of other bands they insist the group is only a hobby, but something they've been tampering with for over five years.
Charlie Webster, guitarist in the band said: "We all met when we were at High Melton College. We were all doing solo stuff or we were in different bands and we just started recording stuff together."
The group, prone to never playing live, only came to our attention when they entered the demo showdown.
Charlie said: "We are basically more of a studio band than a live band. We've all played live but not as the Anderson Council and we've never played live together. It's quite intimidating really!"
So now this group have headed out of the bedroom and into the public eye, maybe we can expect some new material, or dare we say a gig? Either way, they will be appearing on local radio very soon.
