SOME of the biggest stars of the Eighties are under starters' orders to shine in Doncaster tomorrow night.
For a host of singing sensations from the decade will descend on the racecourse for a feast of fantastic pop and classic tunes as racing and music combine.
The big-name performers lined up for tomorrow's show are Paul Young, Midge Ure, Kim Wilde, Curiosity Killed The Cat, Kid Creole and the Coconuts and Belinda Carlisle.
And the Kid himself took time to speak to the Free Press ahead of the show and admitted that he can't wait to get the party started!
He said: "It's gonna be great - its gonna be a party! We want everyone to come along and have a good time. We are a party band and we aren't going to let anyone down. Its gonna be fun, fun, fun all the way - unashamedly so!"
The band are best remembered for the funky-themed early 80s hits such as Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy, Stool Pigeon and I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby and Kid, real name August Darnell, says the fans can look forward to a feast of favourites.
He said: "Each act has 20 minutes and we all come on and do the hits that we are best known for. It's great because it gives the audience a taster for each band and leaves the audience yearning for more. So after they leave, they tend to go and dig out more of our music, which is great.
And of course, the flamboyant frontman will be backed up by his legendary backing band - The Coconuts - although he admits things have changed a little over the past two decades.
"Obviously, it's not the original girls but we've kept the look - the same choreography from back in the 80s and the same skimpy costumes,"
He added. "The Coconuts these days come from all over the world - one is South African, one Australian and one British. I will be coming to Doncaster from my home in Sweden while other members of the band will be coming in from Florida and Denmark. When Kid Creole plays live these days its a real international affair - like a meeting of United Nations!
And coming to South Yorkshire will be a homecoming of sorts for Creole.
He said: "I lived in Dinnington for four years and my ex-wife Karen and daughter Savannah, who is now 13, still live there. I loved living in South Yorkshire, primarily because of the people because they were so friendly. Everyone greeted me, even those who didn't know me. When they found out I was American it made them even more curious. I think South Yorkshire people are really genuine, nice guys. When I lived there we were always visiting friends in Doncaster, Nottingham and Sheffield so I have a lot of warmth for that part of the world.
Racecourse spokesman Sharon Bennett said: "A recent 1980s fashion and music revival has highlighted and resurrected a soft spot amongst 'thirtysomethings' for everything 80s, particularly for music fans. But we have received some feedback that people are under the impression that our music nights may be tribute artists despite clearly stating in all communications that they are the genuine artists. They are not. Why bother with tribute bands when you can see the real artists perform live on your doorstep?"
Also on the bill are Paul Young, who racked up a string of smooth and soulful pop hits such as Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home), Love Of The Common People, Everytime You Go Away and Senza Una Donna while Ultravox frontman, Midge Ure has also enjoyed a hit packed career, chalking up successes with the band including Vienna, Dancing With Tears In My Eyes and All Stood Still as well as a massive solo number one with If I Was.
Female soloists Kim Wilde and Belinda Carlisle are best remembered respectively for their top ten smashes Kids In America and Heaven Is A Place On Earth while Curosity enjoy chart success with Misfit and Down To Earth.
As well as a line-up of great stars, guests can also look forward to a full card of racing before the concert gets under way. Rockers Status Quo are due to play at the venue on July 23, and on June 27 current UK chart toppers Alesha Dixon, Lemar and Jamelia will bring a dazzling live extravaganza of urban pop and R'n'B music to Doncaster for the very first time.
Ticket prices for the 80s show start at £25 for Grandstand Admission, County Enclosure £35 and Premier Enclosure £50.
