A COUPLE have hit out at yobs who fired ball bearings at them during a family party claiming their actions could have killed someone.

The Doncaster family were holding a barbecue attended by about 30 friends to celebrate the husband’s birthday when they said five metal balls were fired at them, one of which hit his wife.

The family, who did not want to be named, said two of the quarter of inch bearings smashed a bedroom window of their Hatfield home where the couple’s teenage daughter was with friends.

They have now said more needed to be done to stop similar incidents which could seriously injure or kill someone and called on parents to make sure their children did not have catapults or ball bearing guns.

The husband said: “There were 60 and 70-year-olds at the party who at first thought it was a gun.

“My daughter was in her bedroom with friends when it happened.

“If it was not for the double glazing it would have gone straight through the window and could have killed someone.”

His wife added: “I felt a pain in my rib and at first did not know what it was. We heard a couple of cracks, looked up saw the window go through and realised someone was firing.”

The couple contacted police following the incident which happened at about 10.30pm on Saturday.

Officers searched the area but were unable to catch those responsible.

The husband added: “As far as I am concerned this was a dangerous incident involving a firearm.

“The police can only do so much and people need to be told about incidents like this so they know what is happening and they do not happen again.”

Anyone with information about the incident should contact police (0114) 2 20 20 20 quoting incident number 1360 of the July 12.
