SEVERAL empty buildings in Doncaster's main party street are to open as bars despite a ban on new booze licences in the area.
Three bars are to open in Silver Street with a fourth planned just yards away in East Laith Gate.

Earlier this year Doncaster Council introduced a cumulative impact zone - an order preventing new bars being established in an area of the town - af
ter 554 incident of booze-fuelled crime were recorded in five months.

The zone regulated an area including Silver Street where 327 of the offences took place.

Doncaster Council said two of the new bars in Silver Street will take over existing alcohol licences and the third was granted a licence before the order came into force.

East Laith Gate is not covered by the cumulative impact zone.
Currently there are 11 pubs and bars in Silver Street as well as Trilogy nightclub.

Market Place venues Courtyard and Woolpack also have entrances from Silver Street, meaning if all the proposed new outlets open it would have 17 bars, pubs and clubs in total.

The first of the new developments due to open on July 26 is VIPs next door to Hotel Sushi restaurant.

Owner Neil Watson said: "VIPs is only a provisional name. We might change our mind, but the concept we have in mind is for a classic contemporary bar aiming at the 25-plus age group."

Lazarus Properties is to turn the former Indus restaurant into a sports bar called Hogans which is due to open in late September.

Simon Barnett, spokesman for the developers, said: "We know there's quite a lot of new developments in the leisure industry going on around Silver Street at the moment and we welcome that.

"It all helps to create a good circuit and makes Silver Street the place to be."

Businessman David Bailey is turning a former amusement arcade into a bar in Silver Street and the Moullali family, owners of Le Bistro, are opening Relish a bar and restaurant in East Laith Gate.

Simon Moullali said: "We're going for a more casual atmosphere than Le Bistro, serving food like pizzas and burgers.

"We'll be open from noon until midnight every day and our plans are to open in October."
