FOURTEEN vehicles were taken off the road and eight people had copper and lead seized from them in a police operation that targetted scrap yards.
Officers singled out yards that were suspected of being used to sell on stolen scrap metal for the one-day operation.

Every person visiting the yards was spoken to and their loads checked to ensure they were legitimate.

Sixty-four people were
stopped and asked to account for their whereabouts, 38 vehicles were checked for waste carrier offences, 30 intelligence reports were made and 13 people were asked to produce their driving documents.

Four people were reported on summons, two people were given vehicle rectification forms, one fixed penalty notice was issued, one vehicle was reported to the DVLA for not having any tax, one vehicle was seized for no insurance and an arrest was made for someone who breached their bail conditions.

In addition to town centre safer neighbourhood team officers, the Doncaster Police Tutor Unit, South Yorkshire Police's Operational Support Services, Doncaster Council and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency were involved on May 6.

Pc Brian Evans said: "The first phase of this operation has really made an impact. We reached a lot of people on just one day, so the message has got out that we are targeting people who steal and deal in stolen metals. The next phase will soon be underway."
