Mayor Martin Winter has announced he has become an Independent.
In a dramatic move at Doncaster Council's annual general meeting today, Mr Winter declared he and Coun Stuart Exelby have formed their own self-styled group, Independent Labour.

In a confusing development Mr Winter has, apparently, not quit Labour but has withdrawn his breakaway group of three.

He has created an initial cabinet of just three members - himself, Mr Exelby and Coun Eva Hughes, who is staying within the main Labour Group.

There were no places for previous Labour cabinet members councillors Chris Mills, Glyn Jones and Bill Mordue.

Mr Winter said he would invite discussions from other party group leaders for the other places on the executive.

The move follows two damning government inspectors reports into the running of the council which criticised political in-fighting that has led to poor services.
