MOTORISTS are bracing themselves for the latest round of major roadworks that will pave the way for cross-Doncaster bus lanes.
Work on the final stage of the £15.4m A638 Quality Bus Corridor scheme will start on Monday.
The work will affect the Racecourse Roundabout - one of the borough's busiest - and stretches of Bawtry Road.
The final phase involves creating a new '
off-line' bus lane built on disused land next to the road and substantial landscaping along Bawtry Road between the roundabout and Rose Hill Rise. The 'off-line' bus route will go through the old Belle Vue car park and along Booth Avenue. Bus priority measures will also be introduced at the roundabout and new bus stops will be sited closer to the Dome and Asda.
Work will be carried out on the following stretches of road, although they may be subject to change: carriage widening and resurfacing in Bennetthorpe from Monday to August 3. The widening of the road and the construction of a new junction and traffic lights on Booth Avenue will also start on Monday with completion in April 2009.
A new temporary junction will be created on Bawtry Road to the east of the roundabout from August 11 to September 7.
The construction of a bus lane next to the existing road will be carried out between Bawtry Road and Gliwice Way from September 15.
Work is scheduled during the evening at Racecourse Roundabout and along Bawtry Road. Noisy work will stop at 11pm and on Sunday work will take place between 6am and 3pm.
Temporary closures are also expected along Booth Avenue although the Dome, the Campanile Hotel and the Lakeside Community Church will always be accessible with diversion routes signposted
Work is continuing on the Park and Ride sites at Rossington Bridge, which will serve the southern part of the QBC, and Green Lane, which will serve the northern half.
The whole scheme aims to create cross-Doncaster bus lanes to improve journey times and increase access to jobs and leisure opportunities.
