A DONCASTER Free Press manager and her partner were passengers on a luxury cruise ship which crashed while trying to enter a dock today.
Lorraine Lumb, Doncaster advertisement manager for South Yorkshire Newspapers, and Jonathan Burrows were on board the Queen Victoria when the ship hit a quay entering Valletta Harbour, in Malta.

She said: "The ship was turning when the back of th
e ship crashed into the wall. There was a loud noise and the ship took half of the dock with it."

Lorraine and Jonathan, managing director of Stratstone Land Rover, Wheatley Hall Road, were enjoying a 14-day Mediterranean cruise when the incident happened.

The 90,000 tonnes vessel was launched in December and was making its first visit to Valletta when the incident happened at about 10am British time.

Lorraine said the captain of the Queen Victoria, which had 1,000-plus people on board - who were mainly Britons - had requested that passengers boarded the ship as planned this evening for the boat's onward journey to Tunisia.

She added: "The damage looks really bad, in very calm water there is a big hole which is about a yard above the water.

"I really don't know if the ship is going to be allowed to go anywhere."
