A fag in the hand is worth two in the nest
PEOPLE complain about discarded cigarette ends in the street - but watch out, they could soon be winging their way to gardens and trees near you.
It would seem that a bird in Intake has been recycling unwanted tab ends to help line its nest.
Christine Fry, 67, of Crecy Avenue in Intake discovered the bird's imaginative nest-making material when her grandson Archie found a nest that had fallen from a tree in her garden.
The nest is lined with around 40 cigarette ends which are artistically woven with twigs and other more standard nest-making material.
Christine said: "At the bottom of the nest the bird had made a mosaic all the way round with cigarette ends.
"For them to do something like this, makes me think are they trying to tell us something - to stop smoking or recycle?
"I just couldn't believe it."
Claire Thomas, a wildlife adviser from the RSPB said: "Sometimes the odd piece of man-made material may work its way into the nest of an opportunistic bird, but cigarette butts are certainly the more unusual.
"It may be that this bird has found a regular supply of these discarded objects and has used them accordingly."
