DONCASTER Rovers midfield ace Richie Wellens has joined Championship rivals Leicester City in a club record £1 million deal.
Rovers were reluctant to allow him to leave but had "little choice" according to club chairman John Ryan.

The classy 29-year-old former Blackpool and Oldham midfielders has been one of Rovers best players since signing two years ago but is believed to have been offered a lucrative four year deal by Leicester.

Ryan said: "We're disappointed to lose him but I can understand it from Richie's point of view.

"They were able to offer him a lot more money than we could and, at his age, it could be his last big pay day.

"There is no point keeping players who are unhappy and it then became a question of getting as much as we could for him."

It is understood the deal could rise to £1.2 million in due course.

Rovers previous record transfer was £275,000 received for Rufus Brevett when he joined QPR 18 years ago.
