ASKERN Welfare A retained the Doncaster District FA Challenge Cup after a 3-1 victory over Thorne Town in the final at Brodsworth last Friday night.
The Central Midlands Supreme Division champions had a let off in the ninth minute when Craig Fisher headed a curling cross from Adam Atkinson from under the bar.

But they quickly turned defence into attack when they swept up to the other goalmout
h where Thorne keeper Neil Murray superbly held a powerful header from Michael Bunn.

Lee Wilkinson finished off a penetrating raid with a strong shot to give Welfare a 14th minute advantage while Graeme Severn, after heading inches wide for Askern in the 32nd minute, blocked an effort from Gavin Redfearn on the Askern line four minutes later.

Straight after the interval Daniel Maudslay pounced to improve the lead for Welfare but hopes were raised for Thorne in the 59th minute when Redfearn put keeper Liam Copley under pressure and he missed the ball allowing Redfearn to run it in and reduce the arrears.

Murray did well to smother a 20 yard drive from Gary Evans in the 82nd minute but found a 35 yarder from the same player too hot to hold four minutes later and the ball zipped through his fingers and into the net to seal success for Askern.

Chairman of the Doncaster Senior League Peter Jordan presented the trophy and awards to both officials and teams.
