VICTORY at Twickenham would be the perfect leaving present for departing Wheatley Hills skipper Byron Elliott.
No.8 Elliott emigrates to Canada this summer and is aiming to end his spell at the club, where he has played since a youngster, in supreme style against Hartpury College.

An ankle injury sustained against league rivals Knottingley last month has threatened to rule the 24-year-old out of Wheatley Hills' big day - but he remains determined to lead his troops out.

Elliott said: "It would be unbelievable to finish my time here with a win at Twickenham.

"Five of us - myself, Craig Barker, Craig Howarth, Andrew Penno and Tommy Starbuck - came down to this club when we were 12, so to play there with these lads means a hell of a lot.

"But for me, personally, my preparations have gone to pot.

"With three minutes to go in the last league game of the season I came out of a line out and rolled my ankle.

"I thought that was it for Twickenham - I was so miserable afterwards.
"I was fearing the worst but it's looking better.

"Hopefully it will just require a lot of strapping and painkillers.
"I want to be out there no matter what it takes - I can't miss it."

But he continued: "Preparations for the whole squad are going really well.

"The mood in the camp is good - everyone is looking forward to it.
"All the players have been able to get down to training and the squad sessions have been unbelievable."

What makes Wheatley Hills' journey to the final even more remarkable is that they lost their first game in the competition!

After losing 15-13 to Sheffield in round two they found themselves back in the hunt after their opponents were kicked out for fielding an ineligible player.

Coach Alan Howarth said after the semi-final win against Cullompton that he felt reaching Twickenham was the club's destiny.

Elliott said: "It does feel like fate I suppose but I'm not really a big believer of things like that.

"We've been the underdogs in every round of the cup so far and we've earned the right to be there."

Prior to beating Doncaster Phoenix 34-7 in a warm up friendly two weekends ago the Brunel Road side wrapped up their league campaign with a 36-0 win at Knottingley - their ninth success in ten games.

It means they are heading into the showpiece event in excellent shape.

Elliott, a former pupil at Adwick School, said: "This calendar year we've only lost three league games so our form has been brilliant.

"All the players have faith in one another - when you're on a bit of a winning streak it breeds confidence.

"And in the cup games our performance seems to go up another level."

He added: "We're taking seven coaches from here, plus some lads are going down on the train and families in cars, so I think we could take close to a thousand people.

"We're hoping to get a good crowd down there and get a bit of atmosphere going.

"It's certainly going to be an occasion but there's no point doing the hard work and then not turning up on the pitch.
"We want to be competitive."

Opponents Hartpury come with a fearsome reputation but Elliott shrugged off any worries.

The electrician said: "We can beat anyone on our day.

"Rumours are coming out about them - Gloucester this and Gloucester that - but we've got to go out and play like we have done in the last few games.
"Go out there, be really physical in the first 20 minutes and try to knock them out of their stride.

"Anything can happen in a cup final."

Several of the Wheatley Hills men have played representative rugby at Twickenham before and Elliott is looking to maintain his 100 per cent record at the 82,000 capacity stadium.

He said: "I've played there twice before with Yorkshire Under 20s and won on both occasions - I'm determined to make it three."
