Fourteen-year-old Richard Caine, who is currently enhancing his skills at Rovers' School of Excellence, caught the eye of the former Welsh international while playing for the club's youth side.

Flynn, who was capped 66 times, invited him to Wales for a two day trial and Richard, a centre half or striker, will now train with the national development squad in Cardiff this weekend.

And the Epworth schoolboy is hoping he impresses sufficiently to earn an international bow against England.

"He's delighted because if he is good enough then he would play in the Varsity Shield match between Wales and England," explained proud dad David.

"It's a long way off but, if everything went well, that's where it could lead and all the family are very proud."

Despite possessing an English birth certificate Richard is eligible to represent Wales because his maternal grandfather was Cardiff-born.

David added: "His grandfather is made up, as you can imagine, because he follows Welsh rugby and football.

"The idea of his grandson pulling on a Welsh shirt makes him very proud."
