DONCASTER Phoenix will be hoping to make it third time lucky when they take on their old rivals in the biggest match in the club's history.
Phoenix have lost twice to Castleford this season but both games were close and were only decided by the equivalent of one converted try on each occasion.

Consistent Castleford won promotion at the end of the season while Phoenix finished sixth in Yorkshire Division Three.

But director of rugby Bill Farley said his team was not just going to rugby headquarters for a day out and they were determined to upset the form book and bring the trophy back to Castle Park.

Farley and head coach Dave Senior have been plotting the downfall of their opponents since they defeated unbeaten London club Chiswick in the semi-final of the prestigious national competition.

The duo, formerly team-mates at Doncaster Knights, have been meticulous in their planning as Phoenix have successfully negotiated each round and Farley believes they might have been challenging for promotion themselves with a better start to the season.

He said: "It's all about consistency - and Castleford have had that - but on our day we can beat anyone in the division.

"They will be favourites to win on the day and we will be the underdogs but we fancy our chances of producing an upset.

"The two games we played against them were both similar in that they scored points early on and we hit back and were pushing them all the way at the end.

"They are a very competent side with a big, well-drilled pack and they have a lively lad playing in the centres who we need to keep an eye on.

"Our biggest failure this season has been conceding points early on so we will be hoping to control the game and keep it tight at the start before going on to play our normal game."

The fact that the final is at Twickenham has been a motivating factor for Phoenix throughout.

Just to put the occasion in context it would be the equivalent of Armthorpe Welfare playing at Wembley or Thorne Colliery cricket club playing at Lord's.

Farley said: "You don't really start to think about the possibility of going to Twickenham until the latter stages of the competition but when we reached that stage Dave Senior made sure the players knew what was at stake.

"There has been an air of excitement since we won the semi-final and we are looking forward to the trip to London.

"I think it's great that two teams from the region have reached the final and hopefully we will produce a game that will be a great advert for Yorkshire rugby."

Phoenix are strictly an amateur side and the players come from a variety of backgrounds with an electrician, a fireman, farmer, accountant and marketing executive in their squad.

But they will look like a professional outfit on the day with the players kitted out in smart club suits and a brand new team strip and tracksuits.

Farley added: "We are going there to enjoy the occasion but we are also going there to win.

"The players will be having an evening meal in the hotel down there the night before and it will be lights out about 10pm.

"We will do our celebrating when we've won the game."
