New signing for Knights

PREPARATIONS for next season are continuing at Doncaster Knights after a weekend defeat at Cornish Pirates all but dashed their hopes of matching last year's top three finish.
Exeter Chiefs hooker Simon Jenkins has agreed to join Knights, who have also been boosted by four current stars pledging their futures, for their anticipated promotion push next year.

The signing of Jenkins means Lynn Howells' men have two quality hookers at their disposal with Steve Boden also putting pen to paper on a new one year deal this week.

Prop Richard List will remain at Knights for a further year while Anthony Carter and Chris Planchant have agreed new two-year contract extensions.

On their way out of Castle Park though are Spencer Davey, Ben Jones and Scott Gray who are set to move to the Premiership with Newcastle, Worcester and Northampton respectively.

The reshuffle comes after Knights dropped to fifth spot in the National Division One table after losing out 63-36 in a 13-try battle at Camborne on Sunday.

The Pirates leapfrogged the Knights on the back of their big win, helped enormously by Doncaster being reduced to 14 men for the whole of the second half following the sending off of Wes Davies for an off-the-ball incident.

Pirates made the most of the extra man and found overlap after overlap and, while Doncaster were ahead at the break, the home side punished them with seven more tries to secure a comfortable victory.

Stand off Mark Woodrow kicked a huge penalty after two minutes and Donovan Van Vuuren touched down shortly after to put Doncaster 8-0 ahead.

But the Pirates opened their account with No 8 Tim Cowley scoring on 20 minutes and, after Woodrow had kicked another penalty four minutes later, the home side took the lead with second row Heino Senekal scoring, and former Rotherham ace Gareth Steenson kicking the conversion, to take a 12-11 lead.

Woodrow and Steenson traded penalties on 34 and 36 minutes but Woodrow added another right on the whistle to edge Doncaster into a 17-15 half time lead.

With the Knights down to 14 men they were expected to suffer but it was the Yorkshire side who scored next with flanker Bryn Griffiths touching down.

Woodrow converted for a 24-15 lead but it was not long before the Pirates began to assert their authority.

Outside centre Paul Devlin crashed over on 49 minutes and right winger James Moore added another two minutes later which Steenson improved to put his side 27-24 ahead and, on 56 minutes, prop Dan Seal put his name on the scoresheet as the home side found the extra man on almost every attack.

Now 34-24 ahead the Pirates showed no mercy and left winger Vunga Lilo raced in on 58 minutes, Steenson converting again.

Hooker Boden scored a third try for the Knights, and Cerith Rees converted, but there was no way back for Doncaster with Steenson landing a drop goal on 66 minutes and Lilo adding his second try, while Steenson kicked the conversion for that try and also a 73rd minute effort from Moore.
