KNIGHTS full back Anthony Carter has been announced as new club captain, writes Paul Goodwin
The 27-year-old moved to Doncaster from local rivals Rotherham Titans two years ago while he was still recovering from a serious leg break.

And he has since repaid the faith shown in him by Director of Rugby Lynn Howells by becoming one of the club's most consistent performers in National League One.

Now the Welshman has been handed the highest accolade possible at Castle Park - and he is determined to make the most of the opportunity.

"It's a big honour to captain any side but to captain a club which has so many experienced players is a real thrill," said Carter.

"We've got a pretty impressive squad here so the pressure is on to perform when the new season gets going.

"I hope to lead by example on and off the pitch," he added.
"I think it's the nature of the game these days - the captain has to be vocal."

Carter, a qualified physiotherapist, replaces former club captain Glen Wilson who left Knights at the end of last season following an injury-ravaged 2008.

His appointment follows a comprehensive overhaul of the current playing squad as preparations intensify for the club's first pre-season friendly at home to Premiership side Worcester Warriors on August 17.

"We're being pushed pretty hard in training and we're looking forward to Worcester," said Carter.

"There's been a big turnover of players - especially with the backs - but there's a really good spirit and everyone's pretty excited about the season ahead.

"In the past it's been about putting on performances for our loyal supporters and this year will be no different."

Carter had previously played under the leadership of Lynn Howells at Celtic Warriors.

He has also had two successful spells at Bridgend where he also skippered the side.

Howells said: "Anthony is a leader off the pitch as well as on - and a great example to the players around him.

"He is looking fit and there is no reason why this couldn't be the biggest season of his career."
