GARETH Morton has left the Dons just two months after arriving at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The ex-Hull KR and Scotland centre has joined Widnes Vikings after asking to be released from his contract on Friday following Doncaster's 36-16 defeat at Oldham the previous night.

He will link up with his former international coach Steve McCormack at National League One side Widnes.

The North West club discover today whether their application to join Super League from next season until the end of the 2011 campaign has been successful.

Dons director of rugby Carl Hall said the club did not want to stand in the way of Morton who has previously lived in Widnes.

Morton most recently scored six goals for Doncaster in a comfortable 44-16 win at Swinton just three days after Ellery Hanley's men were thrashed by Salford in the final of the Northern Rail Cup.

He signed for the club in May following a spell in the Italian rugby union league.
