ROVERS' return to the City Ground could not be more apt in its timing.
Last season's memorable Boxing Day bonanza kick-started a superb run of seven wins from eight games which catapulted lowly Doncaster up the Championship table.
Rovers blew Forest away with a four goal blitz and ended up 4-2 victors on a day when Sean O'Driscoll's men clicked into gear in devastating fashion.
Saturday's professional and extremely pleasurable dethroning of a much-revered Queens Park Rangers side was another one of those memorable days.
When Rovers are good, they are usually very good.
And performance-wise, there have been more good days than bad ones this season.
It has been getting the right result, in addition to the performance, which has been the problem.
But the clinical and classy manner of last weekend's showing should give every single player at the club a huge injection of self-belief and confidence, heading into a hectic winter schedule.
Everyone associated with Rovers will be hoping this next visit to Nottingham, on the back of such a morale-boosting win over QPR, can provide another springboard for a similar run to last term.
The likes of Leicester and Swansea, now sitting third and fourth respectively, have shown how a short sequence of good results can propel any side up the Championship.
A repeat of last December's wonderful win would, of course, be fantastic.
But while drawing too many games has been Doncaster's downfall so far this season, a point at the City Ground to keep things ticking over would be a very decent return.
And a study of the form guide suggests that a stalemate of some description might be where the smart money lies.
Forest, under the guidance of wily Scot Billy Davies, have become a very difficult team to beat - and boast the only unbeaten away record in the division.
They have drawn their last four Championship games one apiece, while eight of their league matches in total have ended all square - a number only exceeded by Rovers' nine draws, and Ipswich's ten.
The signs are there won't be many goals either.
While Rovers have scored more than once in a league game just six times during this campaign, Forest have only done it on four occasions out of 17 matches.
But then there are lies, damned lies and statistics!
Davies has unquestionably put together a tough and uncompromising outfit in his short spell in charge at the City Ground.
When Forest have taken the lead in games they have displayed a doggedness to hold on to their advantage - making the first goal this weekend all the more important.
While they have also shown a liking for a late goal or two on home turf - a sure sign that Davies is running a tight ship in terms of fitness.
The Reds might just need those extra legs should Rovers exhibit the type of passing which had the Keepmoat Stadium on its feet against QPR.
Things might not be so pretty this weekend - but it's a chance for Doncaster to show they can mix it against a side more likely to favour a more physical approach.
The fact that Rovers' three wins have come against a trio of sides more renowned for their passing game - Cardiff, Peterborough and QPR - will not be lost on O'Driscoll and his staff.
Expect former Preston playmaker Paul McKenna to pull the strings for Forest, while Frenchman Guy Moussi will look to break things up in the middle.
Rovers could very well go three at the back to give them a bit of extra muscle - something powerlifter Billy Sharp knows a bit about!
