FOUR tries from ex-Dons star Wayne Green helped Moorends-Thorne Marauders open their Rugby League Conference season with a comfortable 54-8 win at South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Forgers.
In blazing sunshine Green opened the scoring in the sixth minute, Ryan Rafferty converting the first of nine kicks, before further scores from Brendan Neil, Tom Brandham and Rafferty handed Marauders a 24-0 half time lead.
Coach Peter Green used h
is vast knowledge to change a few things during the break and almost straight from kick off his brother Wayne raced 50 metres to the try line.
Seconds later he delivered the killer punch from the restart - collecting the ball and destroying the Sheffield defence to go the full length of the field for his third, Rafferty adding the extras for a 36-0 lead.
Jason Blanchard crashed over soon after but slack marking saw the Forgers hooker barge over to add the Sheffield side's first Conference points.
Rafferty guided Marauders back on track to make it 48-4, although the home side quickly moved the ball wide to reduce the deficit again.
It was Moorends who had the last say when Green claimed his fourth try which was improved by Rafferty, who maintained his 100 per cent conversion rate.
