Double dismay at Twickers

IT was double despair for Doncaster as two local clubs suffered cup final defeats at Twickenham.
Doncaster Phoenix slipped to a narrow 14-11 loss against Castleford in the EDF Energy Junior Vase before Wheatley Hills were outclassed by Gloucestershire students Hartpury College in a comprehensive 83-5 Senior Vase defeat.

A see-saw game saw Phoenix trail 7-0 to their Yorkshire Division Three rivals at half time but two penalties from Ben Millar and a try from Alani Kaihau swung the match 11-7 in their favour.

Seven minutes from time Castleford snatched a converted try to break Phoenix' hearts and clinch the trophy.

Straight after the Phoenix game Wheatley aimed to bring the silverware back to Doncaster but they found it tough going against a superior Hartpury team.

Barely two minutes were on the clock by the time Hartpury, who have close links with Gloucester RFC and fielded several England student stars, crossed for the first of their 13 tries and they stormed into a 17-0 lead within the first quarter of an hour.

But Wheatley never stopped trying and claimed a deserved consolation when flanker Gareth Burns powered over in the dying stages .
