SLIDESHOW: Kids get creative for Wild West day

Waiting for Video...

TOTEM poles and tepees replaced desks and chairs for the day at one Isle primary school.

As part of Luddington and Garthorpe Primary School’s ‘creative curriculum’, staff and pupils embraced the Wild West, with native Indian costumes, and a few cowboys for good measure!

The whole school took part in the special day, after following the topic of native American Indians last half-term, taking in aspects of geography, history and literacy.

Mini Indian villages formed throughout the school, and pupils ‘lived’ the Indian life while learning about it.

Headteacher Elizabeth Farrar said: “The children really enjoy this way of working and get very engaged with their studies.

“To introduce the subject to nursery pupils we used Toy Story, so there were some cowboy clothes to add to the interest. We had some wonderful Indian outfits with a profusion of feathers. Everyone put a huge amount of effort in and it was very successful.”

The day added to general celebrations at the school, that has been upgraded by Ofsted watchdogs from satisfactory to good following a recent inspection.

The behaviour and safety of pupils at the small school was judged to be outstanding.

Mrs Farrar said: “We are absolutely delighted with the Ofsted result. It’s credit to everyone’s hard work here that every aspect of teaching and achievement has been found to be good.

“Everything we do is to improve outcomes for the children, and this report just validates what we know is happening here. There is always room to improve, however, and we have a strong development plan in place.

“We have a strong team spirit and aim for the best we can possibly do at all times.”
