Your new mayor is a real treasure

TREASURE your new mayor. I only wish we had someone like him here in Shropshire.

He is not racist, anti-gay, or anti anything else as far as I understand.

He is simply stating the truth, that whatever you wish to do, and however you wish to express yourself, that's fine, but you must pay for it yourself because there is no bottomless financial pit from which the council can draw.

This, I think, is true of our national political situation too. The new mayor of Doncaster seems to be saying that if something matters to sections of the public, then those people must find ways of organising, and, yes, financing it.

This kind of common sense is needed throughout the land, and I wish we would all elect someone like him.

The fact that he said what he said about, for instance, gay pride, and regardless of any U turns, or lack of them, the underlying principle still has validity.

So what about the translation services? It is not racist to say that someone should learn the language before they come here to live and work. Other countries ask the same of us, and quite rightly so.

People fleeing their countries in terror do not fall into this category.

We are talking of economic migrants. If people wish to live here they should learn the language, and should pay their way. Speaking for my own area, migrant labour is a good thing.

In this politically-correct society where we are scared to speak our minds for fear of offending people who, half the time, are always going to be offended regardless of what we say, it is difficult to say a metaphoric "to hell with it, I'll speak my mind".

Perhaps it is worth considering what happens when someone does exactly that - they are elected mayor.
