At last, someone willing and open

AT last we have someone in authority willing to be open and honest. I understand you (Mayor Davies] do not support speed cameras and thought you might be interested in the attached note I prepared in conjunction with Transport-Watch, in Northampton.

What we found was that the obsession about speed limits and speed cameras has meant that since the mid 1990s about 10,000 extra people have been killed on British roads, compared with what would have been achieved if we had simply continued with the road safety policies and trends of the 1980s and early 1990s, without speed cameras.

From the data I have for deaths and serious injuries in South Yorkshire (up to 2007), despite all the speed cameras and speeding fines there has been no significant reduction in the number of serious injuries and there continues to be an average of about 55 to 60 people killed each year.

I see that South Yorkshire continues to introduce ever more mobile speed cameras.

I would like to visit South Yorkshire and Doncaster for a holiday, but the one thing that puts me off that is the expectation of getting a speeding ticket from hidden speed cameras when driving as safely as I reasonably can on unfamiliar roads.
