FOOTBALL-mad youngster Ethan McGhee will rub shoulders with some of the game’s greats next week with a dream trip to Wembley to lead out England and Brazil.
The sporty Armthorpe Southfield Primary youngster will line up alongside the likes of Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott and Joe Hart, after being picked as a player escort as England take on one of the world’s greatest footballing nations in a friendly on February 6.
And mum Suzanne is hoping Ethan will get the chance to meet his hero, Liverpool ace Steven Gerrard, at the match which is expected to be a 90,000 sell-out.
She said: “He is very excited and has been smiling from ear to ear ever since we found out he’d been picked.
“It was a huge shock and a surprise when we got the letter - we can’t wait.
“His favourite player is Steven Gerrard so it would be amazing if he gets to meet him.”
Nine-year-old Ethan, who plays for Moorends Stingers U9s, has been picked as a McDonald’s Player Escort and will walk out with Roy Hodgson’s team for the prestigious fixture.
But he has no idea who he will be accompanying until the night.
Liverpool fan Ethan, of Poplar Place, Armthorpe, who won the escort place after entering a national competition via the McDonald’s Kickstart website, said: “It will be amazing to walk out with the England players at Wembley.
“I can’t wait to tell all my friends about being on the pitch!”
He will be accompanied to the game by his mum and grandads John McGhee and Keith Clark, while dad Paul and sister Eanna, 10, will be cheering along at home.
Suzanne added: “We registered for the competition last year after I saw an advert in a magazine, and I’d forgotten all about it. It is really brilliant he has been picked.”
Sir Geoff Hurst, McDonald’s director of football, said: “Walking out onto the pitch at Wembley Stadium is an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere will be something else, as it always is when Brazil are playing.
“The McDonald’s football programme is about creating opportunities for people to get involved in grassroots football and to give youngsters footballing opportunities they will never forget.
“Hopefully this will be one of them.”
