Concern over rise in Doncaster jobless figures

DONCASTER has seen its biggest monthly rise in unemployment in a year - despite a national fall in the jobless figures.

Statistics announced yesterday revealed the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in the borough is up by six per cent, rising from 10,056 in December 2012 to 10,658 last month.

Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband was concerned about what he described as the biggest single monthly increase since January 2012.

MP Miliband said: “These figures make for grim reading. Unemployment in Doncaster has risen dramatically despite falling in other parts of the country.

“Long-term joblessness is up yet again – and is now just short of 3,000 – while the number of women out of work has gone up and youth unemployment is still far too high.

“In my constituency alone the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance for more than 12 months has almost doubled in two years. It is unacceptable.”

He added: “What Britain needs is an industrial strength back-to-work programme to match the crisis we face.

“That’s why I’m demanding that David Cameron introduces a compulsory jobs guarantee to get anyone out of work for more than two years straight into a job – one that they would be required to take.”

In Doncaster North, the figure rise from 3,390 to 3,589, while the number out of work in Doncaster Central was up from 4,041 to 4,272. The rise in Don Valley was 2,625 to 797.

Nationally, unemployment fell by 14,000 to 2.5 million and there were fewer people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Work and pensions secretary, Iain Duncan Smith, said the UK was ahead of its rivals in job creation. He said: “The fall in long-term unemployment is particularly welcome and shows that the training and support we are offering is helping people move off benefits and into work.”
