A DEDICATED hospital manager dubbed "Mrs Montagu" has retired after almost 40 years' service at the Mexborough hospital where she spent her working life.
Sue Hill, Assistant Hospital Manager at Montagu Hospital, retired on October 1, having worked there since 1969.
Hospital chiefs and staff paid tribute to the woman they describe as an inspiration.
Sue was nominated – and won – an award at this year's Staff Award Ceremony in July. In the citation, her 'boss', Roy Tyson, Director of Facilities and Commercial Development, and Hospital Manager, Montagu Hospital, said: "During her time at Montagu Hospital, Sue has seen the hospital face an uncertain future, seen it reinvent itself, seen it become a vibrant local hospital again to the population of Mexborough and beyond.
"Her personal contribution cannot be underestimated when speaking of how Montagu Hospital made that transition… She has never sought or expected public fame or recognition for her loyalty, dedication and hard work… Her retirement will see closure on a remarkable career. A career that started some 39 years ago and to many staff, patients and local residents she is 'Mrs Montagu'. A remarkable lady."
Sue joined Montagu Hospital in July 1969 as a Medical Secretary and, during the 12 years she spent in that post, she worked for Orthopaedic Surgeons, Gynaecologists and Physicians.
In February 1983, she became Secretary to the then General Manager of Montagu Hospital. From this time, she had various administrative roles culminating in her final role as Assistant Hospital Manager.
A spokeswoman for Montagu Hospital added: "Sue has always been an inspiration not just to staff with her comradeship and faith in teamwork, but also her commitment to Montagu Hospital and the people we serve. Montagu Hospital will be a much emptier place without her – she will be sorely missed by all her friends and colleagues. We wish her all the very best for a long and happy retirement".
